The Art and Science of Happiness

Evidence-based coaching for living a happy, fulfilled, and meaningful life.

You know you could be happier, more excited about your life, knowing your purpose and doing what matters. So why aren't you?

Because you were taught to chase it. Get the job, find the person, hit the number, and then you'll be happy. That's not how happiness works.

When I talk about happiness, I'm not talking about constant positivity or chasing good feelings. I'm talking about something deeper: a sense of peace within yourself, a meaningful connection to your life, and the ability to meet yourself and your experiences with greater clarity and compassion.

That kind of happiness isn't something you find when everything finally goes right. It's something you cultivate through the way you relate to your mind, the choices you make, and the way you show up for your life every day.

How to Create and Live a Happy and Fulfilled Life

It took me many years of studying, learning, and exploring to understand what creates a truly fulfilling life. Along the way, I studied psychology, worked with coaches and teachers, attended workshops, and learned from some of the best minds in human behavior.

One of my deepest influences came from my partner of ten years, a hospice nurse, who shared stories about people at the end of their lives and what they discovered truly mattered.

Over time, all of this learning came down to five essential principles that form the foundation of my coaching.

  1. Learn to Live in the Present Moment

The only place life actually happens is here and now.

So much of our suffering comes from being trapped in the past or constantly chasing an imagined future. We replay old stories, worry about what might happen, and miss the one moment we actually have: this one.

Learning to be fully present allows you to experience more peace, joy, connection, and appreciation for the life you are already living.

Harvard researchers tracked over 2,000 people and found our minds wander nearly half the time. Their conclusion, published in Science: a wandering mind is an unhappy mind.

  2. Discover who you really are.

One of the most powerful discoveries you can make is realizing that you are not your thoughts, feelings, emotions, or the stories your mind creates.

You are not your fear, your anxiety, your past, or the labels you have collected along the way. You are the one noticing them.

When you create space between yourself and the contents of your mind, you gain an immense amount of mental and emotional freedom. Instead of being controlled by your thoughts and feelings, you become free to create consciously and intentionally with your mind.

This is the core of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, backed by hundreds of clinical trials. Learning to see your thoughts instead of getting lost in them is one of the strongest known predictors of mental health.

  3. Own your life.

Many people become trapped by circumstances, old patterns, or the belief that their happiness depends on what other people do. They live as victims of their thoughts, emotions, past experiences, and the stories they have created about themselves.

But real power begins when you take ownership for yourself, your mind, your choices, and your creations.

Through coaching, I'll help you cultivate the awareness, honesty, and courage to stop living as a victim and start living as a powerful creator of your life.

Forty years of research by Deci and Ryan identifies autonomy, the sense that your life is yours to direct, as one of three basic human needs.

  4. Face your mortality.

Nothing brings clarity like remembering that your time here is limited. When you accept that life is precious and finite, your priorities shift. You start asking better questions: Who do I want to be? How do I want to show up? How do I want to be remembered?

Facing mortality isn't about fear, it's about freedom. It helps you stop wasting your life on what doesn't matter and start investing in what truly does.

This is also the fastest way I know to find your purpose. Strip away everything that doesn't matter and what's left is what you're here for.

Stanford research by Laura Carstensen found that when people sense their time is limited, they shift toward what matters most, and report greater wellbeing.

  5. Dream big and transcend yourself.

Have a dream, a purpose bigger than you. Be bold. Go after what you want. You're here for a reason, and true fulfillment comes from contributing, connecting, and offering your unique gifts to the world. This isn't about putting yourself last. It's that the deepest happiness comes from serving something beyond yourself. The happiest people aren't just chasing success. They're living with purpose.

Studies show that having a sense of purpose predicts living longer. The Harvard Study of Adult Development, running for more than 85 years, keeps pointing to connection and contribution as the strongest predictors of a happy life.

You get one life. There are no practice rounds, no rewinds, and no guarantees of tomorrow.

The question isn't whether your life will end. It's what you'll be able to say about the way you lived when it does. Will you be able to say that you lived your own life, not the one everyone expected of you. That you chose love over fear. That you allowed yourself to be happy.

What You Should Know: Understanding Your Mind

A big reason we struggle to create lasting happiness is simple: we don't understand how our minds work.

Your brain and nervous system are not designed to make you happy. They're built to keep you safe. They constantly scan for problems, compare you to others, replay the past, and imagine possible futures, not because something is wrong with you, but because these are the strategies your mind has developed to protect you.

The problem is that these protective patterns can create suffering when we become identified with them. We believe every thought, fear, and worry is the truth, rather than recognizing it as the mind doing what it was designed to do.

When you understand that your mind is constantly trying to protect you and predict what will happen next, you gain a new level of freedom. You begin to understand yourself more deeply, and you start seeing the hidden patterns that influence almost everyone around you.

Daily Practices

The five essential principles are what this work is built on. These practices are the daily work.

Be here now

Our minds naturally wander, replay the past, and imagine the future. Presence brings you back to the only moment when life really happens. From there, you can meet yourself and your life with greater awareness, compassion, and choice.

Accept, don't judge

Letting go of judgment, of yourself and of others, opens the door to real connection. Acceptance allows you to meet yourself and others as they are, with greater compassion and understanding.

Let go

Let go of the grudges, drop the upset, and forgive. Mental replays and resentment are weights you carry. In this moment, you can set them down. When you do, happiness returns.

Be Present With Others

The quality of our relationships depends on the quality of our presence. When you are fully here with another person, listening without judgment or the need to fix, people feel seen, understood, and valued.

Appreciate What Is

The mind naturally looks for what is wrong or missing. Presence helps you notice what is already here. Through gratitude and appreciation, you train your attention toward the people, moments, and experiences that make life meaningful.

These are simple practices, but they create profound change when practiced consistently, one moment at a time.

"If I were to search for the central core of difficulty in people as I have come to know them, it is that in the great majority of cases they despise themselves, regarding themselves as worthless and unlovable."

— Dr. Carl Rogers

One more thing before you go.

I want to share something that I believe is at the heart of happiness.

That was the conclusion of Carl Rogers, one of the most respected psychologists of the last hundred years, after spending decades sitting with people and listening to them.

I have discovered the same thing with almost every client I've worked with, in some way, they regard themselves as unworthy of love.

It shows up as putting things off for years, as the drink at night, as staying in a relationship that isn't right, as being hard on yourself in a way you'd never be with a friend. The shame and the old fears sit in the dark and run their lives without ever revealing themselves.

Somewhere, at some time, someone may have lied to you and told you that you weren't enough, or that there was something wrong with you. They sentenced you to a lie. Literally a sentence you may have been living out your whole life.

You deserve to have a relationship with yourself built on kindness, respect, and compassion.

If you work with me, much of our work will revolve around self-acceptance and self-compassion. Because in the long run, that's the most powerful and life-changing work you will ever do.

You're invited into a bigger life. This is a place for aliveness, for love, for joy, and for giving yourself to what you care about most.
